Introduction

CESC, a power utility in India was setup in 1899. It is claimed that it brought electricity to Calcutta, just a few years after electricity was first used to light up London.

CESC is part of the RPG Group which has a strong presence in the fields of power generation, transmission network, cable manufacturing and consultancy in the operation and maintenance of power plants. The group has strategic tie-ups with a number of Fortune 500 companies.

History

From its first tiny DC station at Emambaugh Lane operating from April of 1899, CESC has moved from strength to strength. Its latest station, Budge Budge, with a capacity of 500 MW, is the largest ever private industrial investment in West Bengal.

CESC is one of the major private sector organisations in India with an annual turnover of Rs.17 billion in 1998-99. It supplies power to 14 million citizens of Calcutta and Howrah across a licensed area spread over 567 sq. km., with direct consumers of around 1.7 million.

Generation

CESC has a generation capacity of 1065 MW.

Apart from Budge Budge, there are two other pulverised fuel stations - Titagarh with 240 MW capacity and Southern at 130 MW. All the new stations use latest control and environment protection systems.

The Company has two vintage stations - Mulajore at 60 MW and New Cossipore at 130 MW, both over 50 years old. They are still generating satisfactorily through proper upkeep.

To take care of the growing needs of the city in the early part of the next millennium, another 500 MW thermal power station is being promoted.

Distribution

In addition to generation, CESC has the responsibility of distributing power to the entire population of 14 million in the metropolitan area of Calcutta/Howrah, for which it has to maintain a large distribution network. The distribution system is healthy and reliable - investments are made on an ongoing basis to maintain the network. Over Rs. 5 billion has been invested in the past five years on the network alone. The network includes submarine cables as also cables laid through a tunnel under the River Hooghly completed in 1931, which was a technological wonder of its time. The tunnel links the Southern Generating Station on the east bank of the River to the Botanical Gardens on the west bank. It is a 690 yard tunnel, 6 feet in diameter and 90 feet below ground level, transferring power in bulk from WBSEB and DVC.
